Trump Administration Launches America.gov as “Front Door” to Government
The Trump administration launched America.gov, a website designed to allow the public to access federal information and services in one place instead of navigating websites of multiple agencies.
The website uses artificial intelligence (AI) to search and synthesize information from thousands of official government websites.
In his executive order directing all agencies to integrate their public-facing services with America.gov as soon as possible, President Trump called the website the “unified digital front door to the Federal Government for every individual in the United States seeking Federal information or service.”
“You’ll now have one front door for every single question. Everything will be answered easily and quickly,” said President Trump at the signing ceremony.
The administration says the new site is a “secure, intelligent, and service-oriented point of entry” where an individual can sign in and communicate in “plain language, receive accurate answers, and, where authorized and technically available, complete Government transactions without being required to navigate the websites of multiple agencies.”
Gaining Public Trust
While the administration envisions America.gov eventually allowing users to complete transactions such as applying for a passport or enrolling in Medicare, the platform currently primarily provides information and directs users to the appropriate government resources.
GSA Administrator Ed Forst says the goal is to gain public trust before more services ramp up.
“People need to start with something simple to gain confidence and familiarity with it, and you kind of play with it,” said Administrator Forst to the Washington Post. “Quite frankly, you don’t jump to the end game past that.”
The Post noted that the chatbot is most useful today for “surfacing obscure information from the depths of government websites.” It notes that the technology is “imperfect” and that the chatbot attempts to avoid discussing politics.
Within 90 days of the executive order, the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) will issue an implementation memo to give agencies more details on integration.
