Tomorrow: Confirmation Hearing for New OPM Director

President Trump’s nominee to head the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM), Jeff Pon, will receive a confirmation hearing tomorrow in the U.S. Senate’s Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs (HSGAC).

Pon was originally nominated in September, but his confirmation hearing was delayed by HSGAC Chairman Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI), who said he would not allow the hearing to move forward until OPM released documents of interest to the Senator.

Specifically, Sen. Johnson sought documents “regarding the agency’s decision to allow employees of Congress to purchase health insurance on the D.C. Small Business Health Options Plan exchange and receive an employer subsidy.”

However, following a subpoena from Johnson back in December, OPM indicated an increased willingness to cooperate, according to a spokesperson for HSGAC.

Pon has received the support of federal employee groups. The Government Manager’s Coalition (GMC) sent a letter following his nomination last year endorsing him.

“Mr. Pon has the background necessary to step in and provide crucial guidance to the agency and to federal workers,” read the letter from GMC, which is made up of associations representing tens of thousands of federal employees. “Mr. Pon’s federal government experience, background as a human resources expert, tenure as Chief Human Capital Officer at the Department of Energy and the Deputy Director of eGovernment at OPM, promise a broad and relevant skill-set ideal for filling this crucial government role.”
