Standing Together: Why FLEOA Matters Throughout Your Career and Beyond

By Mathew Silverman, National President, Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association

Federal law enforcement is a profession built on responsibility. We accept difficult assignments, make consequential decisions, and serve knowing that our work can place extraordinary demands on our families. Yet the commitment we make to protecting others must include a commitment to supporting one another.

As we begin this FLEOA column in FEDagent, I want to introduce our association with a simple message: Every federal agent and officer deserves someone in their corner, throughout their career and into retirement.

Founded in 1977, the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association is a nonpartisan, nonprofit professional association representing federal law enforcement personnel across agencies. Our founders understood that agents needed access to legal assistance and a collective voice. Nearly five decades later, those needs remain central to our mission.

Legal assistance is a cornerstone of FLEOA membership. An agent can perform their duties professionally and still face an allegation, investigation, or critical incident that threatens their career and financial security. Having access to experienced legal guidance can make an enormous difference during those uncertain moments.

FLEOA provides legal assistance and representation in eligible matters, along with a hotline available around the clock for emergencies. Members should understand the applicable program requirements and contact FLEOA promptly when assistance is needed. You must be a member in good standing when an incident occurs; joining afterward does not establish eligibility for that incident.

That is why I highly encourage colleagues to consider membership before a crisis. Preparation is an integral part of our profession. Supporting your own professional security deserves the same attention you give to preparing for an operation.

Our responsibility also extends to Washington, D.C. Decisions about compensation, retirement, benefits, and working conditions affect our ability to recruit, retain, and support a capable federal law enforcement workforce. FLEOA brings the concerns of priority areas that effect agents and officers to Congress and agency leadership and vigorously advocates for our members.

Our nonpartisan approach keeps that work focused on the people who serve. We seek practical solutions, build relationships, and advocate for the resources and protections our profession requires. Membership strengthens that effort by connecting national advocacy to the experiences of those doing the job.

Retirement does not end that connection. Retirees remain an essential part of FLEOA, and their interests deserve sustained attention. Advocacy involving retirement benefits, Federal Employees Health Benefits, post-retirement employment, and the Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act can continue long after an officer’s final assignment.

FLEOA offers retired members many benefits including legislative advocacy and updates, networking opportunities, and continued involvement through local chapters. Just as importantly, retirees bring experience and perspective that can help guide younger colleagues. Their participation preserves the knowledge and relationships that strengthen our profession.

Supporting members also means recognizing the families behind the badge. Although a separate entity, the FLEO Foundation provides charitable assistance during serious hardship, including line of duty deaths, serious injuries, and debilitating illness, as well as educational awards for members’ children. FLEOA’s mental health and wellness resources and chapter connections further reinforce the importance of seeking support and staying connected.

An association’s strength ultimately comes from participation. I encourage eligible members to attend a chapter meeting. Share a concern. Help a colleague understand the resources available. Consider how your experience could contribute to our shared work.

Through this column, FLEOA looks forward to discussing the issues affecting active and retired federal law enforcement personnel and explaining how FLEOA is responding.

If you are already a member, thank you for helping sustain that mission. If you have not joined, I invite you to visit FLEOA.org and explore membership. Whether you are beginning your career, approaching retirement, or enjoying the next chapter, you have a place in this association.

We spend our careers answering the call for others. FLEOA exists to help answer yours.
