A Day in the Life of Alesia Smith, Paralegal Specialist and NOW Generation Coordinator

The FEDforum is brought to you by WAEPA, the life insurance choice of over 46,000 Feds and their families.

The prompt for the FEDforum is: What is a day in the life for a member of your organization? This week, hear from the Blacks In Government (BIG).

Alesia Smith, the NOW Generation Coordinator for Blacks In Government (BIG), is a Paralegal Specialist at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and has been a member of the civil service for the last 5 years.

The CFPB is a 21st century agency dedicated to helping consumer finance markets work by ensuring that rules are more effective, consistently enforced, and empowering consumers to be more in-control of their finances, so banks, lenders, and other companies treat you fairly.

In her role, Alesia manages case files, interviews former employees and consumers about their experiences with various companies, and conducts legal research. In addition to that, she serves as a senior paralegal providing guidance and mentoring to junior paralegals and support staff, as well as reviewing resumes for and interviewing potential new paralegals and attorneys. Her favorite aspect of the job is speaking with consumers and listening to their experiences.

Of course, BIG is a non-profit organization that acts as an advocate for the employment and general welfare of Blacks employed in Federal, State and local governments and has established a national network of those employees who collectively engage in mentoring, networking, and training. As the NOW Generation Coordinator, Alesia focuses on programming for young professionals of BIG under the age of 40 who are looking to enhance their success and become leaders in the workplace.

At BIG, Alesia is responsible for recruiting members for the committee, running committee meetings, planning committee events, implementing programs, attending the National Executive Committee (NEC) monthly meetings to collaborate with other national leaders, and managing the NOW Generation budget. In addition to that, she serves as a guest speaker for other BIG committees, BIG chairs, and outside events to share what the NOW Generation is, what the benefits are, and how to get involved. Her favorite part of this role is curating networking events for the group so like-minded professionals can connect. Whew! A day in the life of BIG NOW Generation Coordinator Alesia Smith sounds really busy and fulfilling!

This column, written by Alesia Smith on behalf of Blacks In Government (BIG), is part of the FEDforum, an initiative to unite voices across the federal community.
