Sequestration Updates - Furloughs Have Begun

Furloughs have started at several agencies – what are the updates?

At the Office of Management and Budget, furloughs have already begun for career employees. Political appointees at OMB will not be subject to forced time off. The agency sent furlough notices to 480 employees on March 7. Those affected will need to take 10 days between April 21 and Sept. 30.

Furloughs have also begun at the Environmental Protection Agency, the Federal Aviation Administration and the Department of Labor.

On Monday, the Internal Revenue Service sent all employees notice of five scheduled furlough days, beginning May 24. The remaining furlough days for IRS employees are June 14, July 5, July 22 and Aug. 30. The agency is still considering the possibility of adding two additional furlough days.

In addition, two agencies within the Agriculture Department, the Farm Service Agency and the Rural Development division, are also facing possible furloughs. Employees at those divisions could be forced to take up to 10 furlough days.
