OPM Proposes Updated Regulations on Compensatory Time Off For Religious Observances
The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) has issued proposed regulations amending existing regulations on compensatory time off for religious observances. The proposed update would amend regulations initially put in place in 2005.
The updated regulations were informed by experience of the past eight years, comments received during the initial comment period, and an October 2012 Government Accountability Office (GAO) report on the subject.
Under the new rules agencies would need to provide proof of religious holidays in order to take compensatory time off, but those employees would have an extended time period of 26 pay periods, or one year, to make up the work hours.
OPM says the one-year timeframe for religious compensatory time off would better align with other compensatory time off provisions available to federal employees.
