Tuition to Remain the Same for Feds Utilizing Online College Benefit

Feds seeking to further their education online through a partnership with Champlain College will maintain current tuition rates even as the school shifts to a different payment model in the fall.

According to their website, participants in the truEd program, will pay per credit rather than a monthly subscription beginning in fall of 2016.

“There will be no tuition increase for federal employees, their spouses or their legal adult dependents,” the site said, referring to the 2016-2017 school year which runs from the fall through the summer.

truED is the product of a partnership between the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) and Champlain’s online continuing professional studies department, and currently offers federal employees, their spouses and their adult dependent children access to more than 60 certificate, bachelor’s and master’s degree programs. The tuition ranges from $250 to $597 per month, depending on the program and how many credits are taken, and participants can receive up to 70 percent off regular tuition rates through the arrangement.

“Our agreements with higher education organizations like Champlain College help to strengthen the federal workforce and build on our ability to be a model employer,” said Beth Cobert, acting OPM director. “Partnerships like this also help to close skills-gaps in areas such as cybersecurity, human resources, leadership, and more.

According to Champlain, this new payment model will give truED students more flexibility with their payment and course scheduling, as well as “clearer documentation for your employer tuition reimbursement programs,” and “more expeditious processing of certifying for VA benefits.”

Since the partnership began in April of last year, 1,763 students – made up of feds, their spouses and dependents – have participated in the program, taking over 3,500 courses. Additionally, the program has so far estimated tuition savings of roughly $5.4 million for enrollees.
