NARA Releases Guidance on Managing Email Record

The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) has released guidance on a new approach to managing email records. 

The new records management approach for federal emails is called “Capstone.” The Capstone approach is an option for agencies seeking solutions for managing their email records. 

The Capstone approach would help all federal agencies manage their email records electronically by the end of 2016, as required by previous OMB/NARA memoranda. 


“This approach was developed in recognition of the difficulty in practicing traditional records management on the overwhelming volume of email that Federal agencies produce. Capstone will provide agencies with feasible solutions to email records management challenges, especially as they consider cloud-based solutions,” the NARA bulletin announcing the guidance states.
