Diversity in FBI Special Agent Ranks Falls

Newly released statistics from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) highlight the diversity amongst the Bureau’s special agent and professional staff ranks.

Yet compared with historical data, the Bureau’s special agent ranks are becoming less diverse.

At the end of 2014, 83.3% of FBI special agents were white, 6.81% were Hispanic/Latino, 4.50% were African American, and 4.33% were Asian.

From 2012 to 2014, the percentage of African American special agents dropped from 4.74%, and dropped from 7.14% for Hispanic special agents.

Figures from the mid-1990s on the percentage of African American were 5.6%, and about the same for Hispanic agents at 6.9%.

Following FBI Director James Comey’s recent speech on race, POLITICO examined the Bureau’s struggle to hire a more diverse special agent corps.
