American University and OPM Host Federal Workforce Summit

For the second year in a row, American University’s School of Public Affairs and the U.S. Office of Personnel and Management (OPM) teamed up to host a summit entitled Transforming Human Capital Management Policy Through Research, Innovation, and Analytics.

Noting that “the federal workforce is bigger than nearly all Fortune 500 companies,” the summit sought to answer one fundamental question: “With this many employees, how can government ensure the best available research is driving human resource and operation policies for this important sector?”

This year’s summit was a gathering of 300 experts, including academic researchers and members of the federal workforce, representing 56 Federal agencies, 13 universities, 49 companies and the general public. Four program tracks were on offer, with opportunities for attendees to focus on performance management, diversity and inclusion, workforce reshaping, or analytics and technology.

Keynoting the event were Dr. Anjali Forber-Pratt, a world-record setting paralympic athlete and assistant professor of Human & Organizational Development at Vanderbilt University, and Steve Goodrich, former professional basketball player for the Chicago Bulls and New Jersey Nets.

The summit was said to be an effort, during a time when government is often expected to do more with less, to bring together a diverse array of stakeholders in tackling large problems impacting the future of governance and to determine the status of the latest research in each of the subjects of focus.

OPM claimed the summit would “lead to enhanced collaborations,” noting that “OPM already works with researchers around the country as they look at human resources issues in depth. We provide researchers will access to selected OPM data. For example, by accessing the Federal Employee Viewpoint Survey data, which contains insights on employee engagement, productivity, innovation, and other employee concerns, researchers have written at least 60 academic papers in recent years.”
