Employees Lacking Supervisor Support are Unmotivated, Likely to Quit, Survey Says

A new study from the American Psychological Association’s Center for Organizational Excellence reaffirms the importance of employees feeling as if they have their supervisors’ support in carrying out their roles.Noting that “nearly half of American workers are concerned about the changing nature of work,” the survey found that “those without supervisor support for career development are more likely to distrust their employer and plan on leaving within the next year.”

The 2017 Job Skills Training and Career Development Survey showed a clear connection between Americans who feel they lack supervisory support and negative organizational outcomes. Of those who felt as if they were working without appropriate managerial support, “less than half (48 percent) say they are motivated to do their best at work, 39 percent are satisfied with their job, 16 percent say their company or organization makes them feel valued, and 22 percent would recommend their organization as a good place to work.”

In contrast, 88 percent of those who felt they did have their supervisors’ support reporter feeling motivated to do their best work, while 86 percent reported being satisfied in their jobs, 80 percent reported feeling valued, and 79 percent would recommend their organization to other job-seekers.

A common theme throughout the survey was a feeling amongst workers who felt they lacked supervisors’ support that they also lacked opportunities to develop their professional skills.

The report specifically notes that “employees reported feeling more supported by their supervisor when they were provided with opportunities to develop the technical, management and leadership skills they believe they will need in the future and when there was an expectation that employees will participate in job-related skills training and career development activities.”
