OPM Finds Employee Engagement Continues to Improve

The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) released initial results from the 2016 Federal Employee Viewpoint Survey (FEVS), highlighting that employee engagement has marginally improved since last year.

About 65 percent of the workforce says they feel engaged at their agency, a slightly higher number than last year’s 64 percent score. This, however, did not reach the administration’s goal of 67 percent engagement by 2016.

“This FEVS data provides agency leaders with valuable information they can use to evaluate current procedures, while encouraging their front-line supervisors to further engage and mentor their employees,” said OPM Acting Director Beth Cobert. “We know that employee engagement drives performance and engaged and motivated employees are essential to the health of the Federal workforce.”

With representation from 80 federal agencies, 407,789 employees voluntarily participated in the survey this year, and it is the second year running that government-wide employee engagement and satisfaction has increased.

Among some of the notable results include an increase in employee engagement at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).  It’s overall score rose from six-year low of 53 percent last year to 56 percent in 2016.

“Hopefully, this year’s improved results are the beginning of a new upward trend,” DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson said. “I hope that the next secretary of Homeland Security continues to make employee satisfaction a top priority.”

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) scored best with 82 percent engagement and satisfaction, with the NASA not far behind at 79.6 percent.

A more detailed version of the 2016 FEVS results will be released in digital and print formats in early October.
