Shoring Up the Government’s Cybersecurity Workforce

Cybersecurity has been identified as a mission-critical skills gap area for the government, yet the government continues struggle.

The government needs to attract, hire, and retain the thousands of cybersecurity professionals.

To assist agencies in filling cybersecurity positions, last week the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) issued a memo, Cybersecurity Hiring, Pay, and Leave Flexibilities, to agency human resources directors.

The memo should prove useful to agency hiring managers and human resources staff who often have difficulty navigating the multitude of government-wide, agency-specific, and approval-required flexibilities available.

The same day the Cybersecurity Hiring, Pay, and Leave Flexibilities memo was released to agencies, related Guidance for Identifying Top Five Cyber Talent Gaps was sent to all agency chief human capital officers (CHCOs) and Chief Information Officers (CIOs).

Agencies have until the end of the year to conduct an assessment of their top five cyber talent gaps and report them back to OPM and OMB.
