GSA Announces Increased FY 2016 Travel Per Diem Rates

This fall, federal travelers will receive higher per diem rates while travelling, according to new rates released by the General Services Administration (GSA).

Per diem rates for traveling feds have been the same since FY 2014, and are being boosted on the recommendation of the Government-wide Travel Advisory Committee (GTAC).

The standard lodging rate will raise $6, from $83 to $89. Meals and incidental expense (M&IE) rates were revised for the first time since FY 2010 and will now range $54-$74.

The GTAC, which recently concluded its work and made recommendations to the GSA Administrator, is a group made up of representatives from the travel industry, Fortune 100 corporate travel managers, and federal travel experts.

The GTAC recommended, and GSA adopted, that lodging rates for Continental United States (CONUS) travel be reviewed every year, in addition to the rates for non-standard areas (NSA). GSA also accepted GTAC recommendations to improve the M&IE methodology in the first in-depth review since the 1980s.

“GSA developed a new methodology and conducted a pilot, and determined that a change would continue to provide fair reimbursement to employees as well as save future taxpayer dollars as compared to using the previous methodology,” wrote Christine Harada, GSA’s Associate Administrator of Government-wide Policy in a blog post announcing the new rates.
