President to Request $582.7 Billion for Pentagon

Written by FEDmanager on .

At a speech this week, Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter announced that President Obama will request $582.7 billion in funding for the Pentagon in his fiscal year 2017 budget request.

Carter announced the figure in a speech previewing the Administration’s budget release next week.

The budget request is intended to prepare the Pentagon to take on five key challenge areas: Russia; China; North Korea; Iran; and the fight against the Islamic State.

“We don’t have the luxury of just one opponent, or the choice between current fights and future fights – we have to do both,” Carter said, according to Federal Times. “And that’s what our budget is designed to do.”

Carter said that the funding request will align with the congressional budget deal approved in December last year, but that the funding allocations are designed to bolster the five areas.

Specific details on the budget request can be found in the Federal Times article.
