20/20 Hindsight

The California wildfires are wreaking havoc among Californians’ houses, businesses, and schools.  California’s largest wildfire in state history is all consuming with tough decisions being made each minute to contain the fire and deter further destruction.

With disasters such as this, investigations may follow and allegations may be made. Each decision could face scrutiny, with 20/20 hindsight, to determine if something else could or should have been done to contain the damage and if the right decisions were made at the time. Agencies may come under scrutiny as well as those individuals involved in making those pressured minute-to-minute decisions.

Although containing and extinguishing wildfires is a specialized field, the everyday decisions you make as federal manager can spiral into a metaphorical wildfire that needs containment. Whether a disgruntled employee is trying to gasp for air while filing grievance after grievance to save his or her job, or you are named as a management official in an EEO claim, or your agency is at the center of a political battle, it is important you are equipped with the right tools to contain the allegation you may be facing.

Federal managers are also expected to act to ensure the efficiency and integrity of the federal government. Your responsibility to hold employees accountable can make for a tense and unhappy work environment. If you are named in an allegation, you do not want to go into an interview or be part of an investigation without the necessary safeguards in place to protect your career and ambitions.

The access to legal representation through your professional liability insurance is your best means of extinguishing potential long-term damages to your career.
