Senators Question Payroll Service Centers on Reporting Tax Information of Federal Employees
Seeking to shield the government and its employees from identity theft and tax fraud, the leaders of the Senate Finance Committee, wrote a letter last week to the government’s four payroll providers seeking clarification on reporting practices for employees’ wage and tax statements (Form W-2) to the Social Security Administration and state tax agencies
Chairman Orrin Hatch (R-UT) and Ranking Member Ron Wyden (D-OR) sent their letter to the Agriculture Department's National Finance Center (NFC), the Pentagon's Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS), the Interior Department's National Business Center (IBC), and the General Service Administration's National Payroll Branch (NPB).
“In recent years, identity-theft related tax refund fraud has grown to become an epidemic-level concern to both federal and state tax administrators. State tax administrators are increasingly concerned that the federal government does an inadequate job of filing wage and withholding information with state tax agencies in a complete and timely manner,” the Senators wrote.
“In light of the importance of this information in combating identity-theft related tax refund fraud, and recent reports that this information is often transmitted late, if at all, we write in an effort to better understand the federal government’s performance in this regard,” the Senators continued.
The Senators sought answers to their questions by August 31.
