November 3, 2009
With Election Day upon us and with national media interest in the New Jersey and Virginia Gubernatorial races, a smaller but just as important election took place this Fall. Young Government Leaders held its annual National Executive Board election in September and welcomed the following new Committee Chairs for 2009-2010 two weeks ago: - President - Tim Sommella (USCG)
- Vice President - Shaun Khalfan (Department of Navy)
- Chief Communications Officer - Nnenna Uzochukwu (OPM)
- Chief Strategic Officer - Dave Uejio (NIH)
- Chief Information Officer - Stephen Morris (SBA)
- Director for Program and Events - Jeffrey Press (Center for Radical Improvement)
- Chief Financial Officer - Starrlese Jones (HRSA)
- Issues Director - Patrick Kelly
- Press Secretary - David Wycinsky (Census Bureau)
- Performance Manager - Cedric Goddevrind (GSA)
This election was also different than past years because for the first time Young Government Leader also elected four D.C. Chapter Officers. Since YGL's founding in 2003, the National Executive Board was responsible for professional development, social networking, and community service events inside the District. The D.C. Chapter will take over these day-to-day geographic-specific events and activities.
Over the past year and a half, the Executive Board found itself increasingly challenged with splitting time between managing day-to-day operations and building future capacity and capability. Requests for new chapters, increasing participation and panel appearances throughout the United States, along with the need for additional financial resources, necessitated the formation of a D.C. Chapter governance structure. The new structure was necessary to ensure that the National Executive Board develops and truly focuses on the long-term viability of the organization. The Executive Board Members will primarily concern themselves with national strategy and issues, communications planning, fundraising, liaising with associations and groups, special events, scholarship and awards, curriculum and program design, and infrastructure development for chapters.
For those members who attend events and enjoy the great fun in the D.C. area, nothing will change. Jerome Brown, new YGL D.C. President, will continue to provide the same great service. He and his team, including Emily McLaughlin, Joshua Porter, and Susan Dow are already planning events for the Fall and Winter season. The next scheduled event is a Health Benefit Seminar on Wednesday evening, November 4, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the National Academy of Public Administration. This event was widely popular with members last year, and Aetna will once again sponsor the event to bring young feds the most up-to-date information on the choices available to them.
YGL is an organization building a community focused on change and continuous improvement. These small but necessary steps demonstrate its commitment to providing the best quality service to members in not only Washington, D.C., but across the nation.
YGL is a grassroots organization founded in 2003 by a group of young people interested in meeting other energized Federal government employees. Today, YGL has more than 1,800 supporters in the Washington Metropolitan Area, with local chapters in cities across the United States. As the only 501(c)(3) not for profit professional organization founded and led by young federal personnel, YGL's mission is to educate, inspire, and transform the next generation of government leaders, offering professional development, networking, and leadership opportunities for its members.
