Welcome to Young Government Leaders' (YGL) first monthly feature column in FEDmanager's E-Report! We are excited about our new partnership and we are looking forward to amplifying the voice of government's next generation of leaders on these e-pages. By way of introductions, YGL was founded in 2003 and is the only professional organization created for and run by young federal employees. We are a recognized non-profit and have more than 1800 members in more than 30 agencies and six chapters around the country. YGL aims to be the community of choice for young leaders who want to address the complex challenges facing public servants both today and in the future. YGL's mission is to educate and inspire young leaders to transform government and make it one of the top employment choices for future generations.
Attracting talented young leaders to government at this time is critical. The Office of Personnel Management estimates that 60 percent of the federal workforce will be eligible for retirement by 2016. While today's economic environment may be causing some to postpone their retirement, the government will still need to meet this human capital need over the next several years. YGL is encouraging young people to consider public service, while inspiring those who have already joined to become real agents of change.
YGL is constantly planning new events and opportunities for our members. In addition to conducting professional development events, like resume writing workshops, TSP seminars, and health care plan tutorials, our YGL "Road Show" travels around to federal agencies to discuss strategies for attracting, recruiting, and retaining young leaders in government. We also host a networking happy hour every third Thursday of the month; it's open to members old, new, and prospective. Sign up for our newsletters by emailing younggovernmentleaders@gmail.com to get the latest info or to request a Road Show presentation at your agency.
We look forward to answering your questions and addressing your comments in our upcoming columns here at FEDmanager the first Tuesday of each month. Look for the "Ask YGL" button on the FEDmanager homepage to submit your questions, comments, or ideas.
